2025 Preservation Award from Preservation Buffalo Niagara

Turtle Is one of 11 Most Endangered Places in America

     In  May, 2025, The Turtle was selected as one of  America's 11 Most Endangered Historic Places by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.    President and CEO of the National Trust for Historic Preservation Carol Quillen said: 

“As we approach the 250th anniversary of the United States, we must acknowledge and support the Indigenous history that has so often been hidden and forgotten. The plans to ‘reawaken’ The Turtle would provide exactly the celebration of tribal heritage and culture that we need more than ever.”

TURTLE: DETERMINATION OF ELIGIBILITY FOR NATIONAl Register

     In August, 2024, The Turtle received a Determination of Eligibility for the National Register of Historic Places from the NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation.  


     The criteria for selection was that the Turtle  "Embodies the distinctive characteristics of a type, period or method of construction; or represents the work of a master; or possesses high artistic values; or represents a significant and distinguishable entity whose components may lack individual distinction."
